Pai is the most northern place in Thailand that I have visited. From now on the journey, along the border with Myanmar, goes south again. It promises to be a beautiful route over mountains and through rainforests. Our next destination, Khun Yuam, is again accessible via only 1 road and it is another breathtaking route.
We have come across signposts to caves several times in Thailand and this time we decide to visit one because today's route is not very long. We drive 9 km off the main road to the Lod Caves. These are three huge caves connected by a 1 km long subterranean river. In these caves no colored lamps, signs or beautiful hiking trails. Every three visitors are given a guide, with gas lamp, and are treated to an hour-long tour of huge vaults and taken on a bamboo raft down the subterranean river.
Another wonderful experience enriched, we get on the motorbike to continue our way to Khun Yuam. There are hardly any straight pieces in the road to be traveled, sometimes it looks like a rollercoaster! It is very stuffy and at the end of the afternoon the tiredness starts to set in. Fortunately we quickly found our hotel, which turns out to be bungalows, because an hour after our arrival the rain is pouring down from the sky.
