The Blue Temple of Chiang Rai

By ivo

Vehicle insurance is mandatory in Thailand, but at the border with Laos I could not find an office anywhere to renew or renew my expired insurance. Strange because when I crossed the border in the south from Malaysia I was thrown to death along the road with it.

In Chang Rai there is an insurance office two streets away from me and I hope to be able to take out something there. But that is not easy because the young lady does not speak a word of English. Fortunately, I have my expired insurance papers with me, which helps her to sort things out. During the process and a few phone calls later, she finds out that foreigners can only do this at the head office. Very strange, but I'm lucky again because they are only 1 km away! An hour later I'm out there again with 3 months insurance for the equivalent of € 4.35.

Satisfied I walk back to my guesthouse where I continue sorting photos and editing the YouTube video because you still owe me the blue temple.

Wat Rong Suea Ten, better known as the Blue Temple, is a Buddhist temple notable for its blue color. This color symbolizes purity, wisdom and the lack of materialism that Buddhists strive for.

By the early 21st century, this temple had also fallen into a very poor state of repair and a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist who created the famous White Temple, was allowed to tackle this project. Maybe a little too kitsch, but the result is there!
