When I leave the campsite in Kalambaka it is already nice and warm. It will be 35 degrees today and that makes me decide to head towards the coast, hoping it will be a bit cooler there. The number of campsites on the coast of this part of Greece can be counted on one hand. I choose the northernmost one, as close as possible to Thessaloniki, because I expect a package there in a few days.
The roads are very quiet again. It's Sunday and most shops, restaurants and gas stations are closed. Especially in the countryside. When I stop for a cup of coffee, I see whole families gathering in the village square to take a seat on the terrace.
Fortunately I come across a gas station in a small village that is open and the nice owner tells me that Greece has more than 3000 islands and immediately teaches me a few words of Greek.
Mount Olympus is already appearing on the horizon and when I have driven around it I am almost at my final goal for today. Olympus is the highest point in Greece at 2917 meters and plays an important role in Greek mythology. I check whether the mountain may have roads that come closer to the top, but unfortunately.
When I arrive at the campsite in Makrygialos I first take a dip in the Aegean Sea. The water is warmer than I thought but still cooling after a day of driving. Enjoying the Greek cuisine, with a view over the sea, I postpone the moment to set up my tent for a while.
