Spot whale sharks

There is also a dive shop in the hotel where I am staying and of course I make grateful use of it. Fortunately I brought my diving certificate because there is some paperwork to be completed. I sign up for a day of diving at the popular Sail Rock, a place where the harmless, huge whale sharks are regularly spotted.

The next morning at 07:00 am I am ready for the hotel to be picked up. When we arrived in the harbor we appear to be with only 3 divers and 2 instructors today. The boat can accommodate 30 divers with equipment, so plenty of room to have breakfast and relax during the one-hour boat trip.

I thought Sail Rock was an island, but it's just a boulder sticking out of the water. In the high season it is teeming with divers who swim around the rock at different depths. Fortunately, the rock is very large under water, so there is plenty of room. The five of us make a nice first dive to a depth of 25 meters and then slowly return to the surface. My air consumption is as low as one of the instructors and we stay together a little longer than the rest enjoying the beautiful corals and wide variety of fish.

After lunch we make a second dive, again very nice, but there is a strong current around the rock and that does not make it any better. If a whale shark has swam by at all, we didn't notice it because of that. Too bad, but still a nice diving day.
