Leider Pol Pot had het het lumineuze idee om van Cambodja een zelfvoorzienend land te maken. Hij zette het Khmer Rouge leger in om alle steden leeg te vegen zodat iedereen op het platteland aan het werk ging want de rijstproductie moest verdrievoudigd worden. Een onmogelijke opgave.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intellectuelen werden geacht niet met hun handen te kunnen werken of zich te verzetten en werden meteen, met hun hele familie, vermoord. Hiervoor werden de zgn. gevangenissen en killing fields gebruikt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In de 120 gevangenissen werden de vreemdste bekentenissen door foltering afgedwongen waarna men alsnog vermoord werd. Het moorden in de Killing Fields gebeurde niet met dure kogels maar met knuppels, messen en ijzeren staven aan de rand van massagraven. Baby\u2019s en jonge kinderen werden tegen bomen doodgeslagen voor de ogen van hun moeders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arbeiders op het platteland hadden geen enkele bezittingen meer en moesten 12 uur per dag gedwongen werken. Alleen hierdoor stierven al velen. Uiteindelijk overleefde 2 miljoen van de 7 miljoen inwoners van Cambodja het niet. Iedere inwoner heeft er mee te maken gehad en in het straatbeeld valt vandaag nog op dat er zo weinig ouderen zijn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van de plekken die ik bezoek kan ik alleen nog maar verdrietig en stil worden. Wat een afgrijselijke tijd was dit voor Cambodja\u2026 \ud83d\ude14<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\"
