Colorful Melaka

By ivo

I am in Malacca, a colorful art city in southwest Malaysia. This Unesco world heritage city was an important trading center during the Dutch colonial period and that is still clearly visible. The red square in the middle of the city even owes its color to imported Dutch bricks. Along the river and in the city, many old houses and buildings are brightened up with beautiful street art or fresh colors.

It is wonderful to walk around because there is a lot to see. So much that I'm not going to make it in just 2 days or with my max 10 photos a day. 😀 I'm booking an extra night because I have a small but annoying infection on the cuticle of my finger, which I suffer from when riding a motorcycle. And an extra day of walking around Malaka is absolutely no punishment.

When it gets dark it's even more fun in Malaka. There is colored lighting everywhere and the bicycle taxis, which already look great during the day, are true works of art that light up. This is especially appreciated by the many Chinese tourists. They absolutely love the Pokemon and Hello Kitty decorations.

At weekends, the famous Jonker Street, part of Chinatown, turns into a night market and I shuffle past the many stalls along with the tourists. But luckily it is wonderful to relax on the quay of the river. While enjoying a beer I enjoy the many tour boats and tourists passing by. It is a bit reminiscent of the Utrecht canals with all the bars and restaurants.

This way I can get used to my return to the Netherlands, because that is coming. The cargo flight has been booked and my return flight has been booked. I only have one last day of motorcycling left on this trip; from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur, from where I fly home on July 20. But first I'm going to enjoy that metropolis for a while!
